The Bank of Justin

About a year ago, I wrote a blog post about taking money from my son’s piggy bank in order to keep up with my Starbucks habit. (The caffeine monkey on my back made me steal from my son!) I did it twice and stopped when bad karma kicked me in the ass. I made it a point to stay away from Justin’s piggy bank.

What I didn’t know, until recently, was that Justin had decided to store his money someplace other than his piggy bank. GWE and I knew that Justin had a special drawer in his dresser where he stored things of value. He kept a few coins in there, but mostly it is where he stored his favorite toy cars and “Squinkies.” He also put some packing bubbles in there for his future popping pleasure. And, Justin has also been known to take things that belong to me and hide them in there as well, such as my flask, my wedding ring, and my special Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver. (My “Daddy” toys!)

So imagine my surprise when I went to put some of his favorite cars back into that drawer and discovered a mound of CASH!! It wasn’t just “a couple of ones.” He had a mountain of ones, fives, tens, and even a twenty! Justin had more cash than I did!!!!!

I pulled GWE into Justin’s room and showed her the bounty of cash stored in Justin’s drawer. Even she was surprised!! We immediately told Justin to come to his room and then we asked him where he got the money from. He responded proudly, “Papa Jeff and (Grandpa) Bob.” At that moment, I didn’t know if I was pissed because they gave him so much money or that they had given me none!! What the hell?!?!?!

We told Justin that he had a choice – he could either save the money or use it the next time we went to Target. He chose to save the money. (Of course he did…..he’s smarter than us and planned on using our money during the next Target trip anyway!!) A week later, GWE collected the cash and allowed him to use it to buy a game for his new Leap Pad.

I’m not sure what’s more depressing – having no money in my wallet or knowing that my son is part of the 1%! (I’m gonna go and occupy his room now!)

  1. I hope that the Grandpas know that he has that money…and it wasn’t borrowed from them without permission. Better check!
We’ve found all kinds of things our child has hidden away, including raw eggs…. keep your eyes open!
